Wildfire smoke and your building: filtration and ventilation basics

Call 425-906-7700

Smoke season is now a regular part of summer in Western Washington. Here’s how to keep the air inside your building cleaner than the air outside.

Upgrade filters where the system can handle it

ASHRAE has recommended MERV 13 or better for many buildings when the equipment allows. Higher-efficiency filters add resistance, so some older units can’t take them without airflow problems. A tech should check first.

Seal the filter rack

A great filter does nothing if air goes around it. Gaps in filter racks are common and easy to fix.

Have a smoke-day plan

During heavy smoke, many buildings reduce outside air while still meeting minimum ventilation, then flush the building when air quality improves. Your controls need to be able to do that.

Don’t forget the kitchen and the house

Restaurants need make-up air that keeps up with the hoods. Homes with ducted systems can usually go up a filter grade, and portable HEPA units help in bedrooms.
